This newsletter from the Egyptian Pharmaceutical Vigilance Center (EPVC) focuses on important drug safety alerts, a local case study, and updates on national pharmacovigilance initiatives.
1. Key Safety Alerts and Case Reports
- Reminder Safety Alert: Montelukast Neuropsychiatric Effects
- Issue: The newsletter highlights a warning from the Australian regulatory authority (TGA) about serious neuropsychiatric side effects of the asthma and allergy drug Montelukast.
- Risks: These effects include depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and behavioral changes, which can occur in patients of any age.
- Action for Healthcare Professionals: Doctors and pharmacists are reminded to be vigilant, advise patients/caregivers to watch for these symptoms, and discontinue the drug immediately if they occur.
- Local Case Report: Levothyroxine and Orlistat Interaction
- Incident: A case was reported of a female patient with hypothyroidism whose symptoms worsened after starting the weight-loss drug Orlistat while taking Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement).
- Problem: Orlistat can reduce the absorption of Levothyroxine in the gut, making it less effective.
- Recommendation: To prevent this interaction, the two medications must be taken at least 4 hours apart. Patients on Levothyroxine should consult a doctor before starting Orlistat, as their thyroid medication dose may need adjustment.
2. EPVC News & Initiatives
- “Together for Safe Medicine” Initiative (Wave 7): The EPVC launched the seventh wave of this free national initiative to promote pharmacovigilance among healthcare professionals and the public, aligning with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for health.
- Vigiflow Expansion Project: The EPVC acknowledged and thanked several Ministry of Health directorates and hospitals (e.g., Giza, Cairo, Assiut) for their high rate and quality of adverse drug reaction reports submitted through the national Vigiflow system.
- VigiTest Competition Results: The results of the first pharmacovigilance knowledge competition were announced, with 90 participants. The newsletter published the questions, correct answers, and a list of the top 10 winners.
3. EPVC Tips
The newsletter provided essential Medication Safety Tips for healthcare professionals, emphasizing the “Five Rights” of medication administration (Right Patient, Drug, Dose, Route, Time) and the importance of checking for drug interactions and reporting adverse reactions promptly.
